About the Competitions

These are individual competitions consisting of a 25-question, 75-minute, multiple-choice examination in high school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills.  The AMC 10 is targeted for students in 9th/10th grade, and the AMC 12 is targeted for students in 11th/12th grade.  We will also offer the AMC 8 in January, which is geared for 6th to 8th graders, and more information about that will go out soon.

The AMC provides an opportunity for high school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment.  More information about the competition can be found here:  https://maa.org/student-programs/amc/.

Many high schools host the competition for their students, and it is often done at the school during the school day.  If your child is interested in participating but is enrolled at a high school that will not offer the AMC 10 or 12 in November 2026, we hope they will be able to take it at VCU!

Registration

Please sign the permission form (linked here) to mathk12@vcu.edu.  Once we have the permission form, we will send you a link that you can use to register for the competition.  You will receive a confirmation email directly from the AMC once your registration has been approved.  We’ll also add you to the VCU Math department’s K-12 events mailing list so that you can receive information about other events that we are planning.  Please feel free to reach out with any questions you might have, and we hope to see you and your child at the AMC competition at VCU!
